Explainer: What is cryo-electron microscopy

The science behind the 2017 Nobel prize in chemistry

The 2017 Nobel prize in chemistry has been awarded to three scientists ‘for developing cryo-electron microscopy for the high-resolution structure determination of biomolecules in solution’.

They each contributed to developing a technique that allows scientists to see the intricate structures of proteins, nucleic acids and other biomolecules, and even study how they move and change as they perform their functions.
